Year 10 English
In Year 10, students step into the roles of cinematographers and directors, learning how to manipulate audiences through camera techniques and multimodal elements. They explore how genres and people are represented across visual and written forms, developing their understanding of meaning-making through media. Students also study the rhythm and emotion of music and poetry, analysing how writers use figurative language to evoke powerful audience responses. Finally, students explore the dynamic world of podcasting—researching, scripting, and recording their own episodes across genres such as Horror, True Crime, History, and Politics—combining creativity, voice, and technical production skills.

Year 10 Maths
Year 10: Preparing for the Future
Year 10 is a pivotal year where students refine their skills to prepare for their chosen Senior Secondary pathway (ATAR or General).
- Number & Algebra: Solving more complex linear and non-linear equations, including parabolas and circles. Students explore compound interest and financial mathematics.
- Measurement & Geometry: Calculating surface area and volume for complex shapes and expanding their use of trigonometry to non-right-angled triangles.
- Statistics & Probability: Evaluating the “box plots” and “scatter plots” often seen in the media to understand how data can be used to make predictions.
Our Approach: By using the Cambridge Essential Mathematics program, we ensure that students have access to a wealth of revision material and “hot math” tasks that make learning interactive and relevant to the WA context.
Year 10 Science
In Year 10 Science, students explore real-world science through hands-on investigations. They work with real biotechnologies such as gel electrophoresis and PCR, the same techniques used in DNA testing and COVID research, to uncover how heredity and natural selection shape life. Students also study atoms, chemical reactions, motion, energy, and the universe — from stars to space exploration.

Year 10 Design and Technologies
Designing with purpose, creating with passion, and preparing for the future.
In Year 10 Design and Technologies, students engage with a diverse range of subjects that build real-world skills and creative confidence. In Materials Design (Wood/Metals), students refine their craftsmanship through advanced construction techniques, technical drawings, and safe workshop practices. Cafe Culture introduces students to hospitality skills, food preparation, and customer service, with a focus on contemporary food trends and café-style presentation. Child Development explores the physical, emotional, and cognitive growth of children, equipping students with knowledge of care practices and developmental milestones. In Gaming and Programming, students design interactive digital experiences using coding and game development platforms, while Media Studies empowers them to create and critique visual content through photography, film, and digital storytelling. Across all subjects, students apply design thinking, collaborate effectively, and explore ethical, sustainable, and innovative approaches to problem-solving.
Year 10 HASS
In Year 10 HASS, students explore global democracy and examine threats to Australia’s democratic system, including the role of the High Court and significant legal cases. In Economics, they analyse Australia’s economic performance and how it impacts living standards. Geography focuses on environmental change and management, as well as geographies of human wellbeing, exploring global inequalities and development. In History, students investigate World War II and the post-war period, with a focus on the civil rights movements and the fight for rights and freedoms from 1945 onwards.
Students apply critical thinking skills by evaluating a range of sources to develop informed conclusions and communicate their findings through structured arguments
Upper School Pathway options
Planning occurs each year for a range of ATAR and general subjects at Newton Moore SHS. We are able to offer Psychology, Modern History and Geography. These courses are discussed with the year 9 and 10 students.
Year 10 HPE
Students explore how culture, gender, and media shape health and relationships. They learn about mental and sexual health, and how to find support. In sport, they lead teams, plan fitness routines, and aim for peak performance. It’s all about preparing for life beyond school.
Electives
Personal Fitness This hands-on subject boosts fitness and confidence. Students set goals, plan workouts, and try activities like weights, circuits, running other training methods.
Community Recreation Try something different! Students explore fun activities like ten-pin bowling, beach volleyball, skating, croquet, and more. It’s all about enjoying movement.
Outdoor Education For students who love the outdoors! Learn camping, bushcraft, roping, and navigation. Prepare for an overnight hike and build self-reliance and teamwork.
Moore Sports Play your way! Students help shape the program and enjoy sports like basketball, soccer, multi-sports, tennis, bocce, floor hockey, ultimate and beach volleyball.
Basketball Train like a pro! Students build skills, game knowledge, and confidence through coaching, fitness, and competition. Great for teamwork and leadership.
AFL Kickstart your footy journey! Students develop AFL skills, tactics, and leadership. Open to all levels, with coaching and interschool games.
Year 10 Visual Arts
Exploring identity, culture, and creativity through visual storytelling and artistic experimentation.
In Year 10 Visual Arts, students expand their creative skills and visual literacy through hands-on exploration of art, craft, and design. They experiment with a variety of media—such as painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and digital art—to express personal and cultural ideas. Students investigate the work of Australian and international artists, learning how visual conventions and techniques communicate meaning across time and place. Through the dual focus of Making and Responding, they develop conceptual thinking, refine technical skills, and build confidence in presenting and evaluating their own work. This course lays the foundation for senior Visual Arts studies and fosters independent thinking, aesthetic awareness, and creative problem-solving.
In semester one you will, design and create a 3D Custom Skull Sculpture using Mixed Media, explore your own artistic style and mark your mark by producing an eye-catching 3D skull. Then celebrate the theme of Australiana by designing an “Aussie Classic” clay sculpture inspired by Kenny Pittock.
In Semester two you will explore the world of collage, bringing archival photography to life with colours, textures and animation. Then we will create Ginklet ceramic sculptures inspired by Melbourne Artist Molly Melican. Get ready to push your creative boundaries and experiment in a collaborative, high-spirited and positive environment.
