Year 12 English
In Year 12, students explore how context, audience, and purpose shape meaning across a range of short stories, persuasive, and interpretive texts. They analyse how language, structure, and voice convey values, attitudes, and perspectives, and how these position audiences to respond. Through studying text types such as feature and opinion articles, documentaries, speeches, and short films, students learn to craft their own texts that promote a specific perspective on a social issue. They also study biography and an extended fictional text, examining how representation, privilege, and marginalisation are constructed through language and cultural narratives across different media forms.
Year 12 English refines critical analysis, persuasive expression, and understanding of how language shapes representation and perspective.
Year 12 Maths
Upper School Mathematics (Years 11–12)
In Years 11 and 12, students select mathematics pathways tailored to their post-school aspirations, whether that involves university, TAFE, or entering the workforce. Each course is designed to meet the requirements of the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).
Mathematics Foundation
This course is specifically designed for students who need to build their capacity and confidence to meet the Minimum Numeracy Standard for WACE.
- Focus: Practical math for everyday life, including personal finance, community involvement, and workplace tasks.
- Outcome: Prepares students for immediate employment or further vocational training after Year 12.
Mathematics Essential (General)
A General course focused on using mathematics effectively and critically to make informed decisions in real-world contexts.
- Focus: Solving problems in workplace and personal settings. It emphasizes the math needed for “on-the-job” success and adult independence.
- Outcome: Ideal for students heading toward trade qualifications, TAFE, or direct entry into the workforce.
Mathematics Applications (ATAR)
This ATAR course is designed for students who enjoy using mathematics to solve practical problems in complex environments.
- Focus: Includes financial modelling, geometric and trigonometric analysis, and the use of networks to solve logical problems. It also has a strong focus on statistical investigations to analyze data trends over time.
- Outcome: Suitable for students planning on university pathways in areas such as business, social sciences, or health.
Mathematics Methods (ATAR)
Methods is a highly academic course that introduces the powerful tools of calculus and statistical analysis.
- Focus: Students explore the “mathematics of change”—using derivatives and integrals to model physical processes. It also dives deep into probability and how we analyse variation in the world around us.
- Outcome: Prepares students for university courses in engineering, science, economics, and medicine.
Mathematics Specialist (ATAR)
This is the most advanced mathematics course offered and is designed to be taken alongside Mathematics Methods. It provides a rigorous foundation for those who wish to study math at its highest level.
- Focus: Students explore complex numbers, vectors, and matrices, while deepening their understanding of calculus through formal proofs and mathematical modeling.
- Outcome: Highly recommended for students aiming for careers in physics, mathematics, or high-level engineering.
- Note: This course must be taken in conjunction with Mathematics Methods.
Upper School Science
Aquaculture
The Certificate II in Aquaculture is a two-year, school-based program delivered on site at Newton Moore’s own aquaculture facility, providing students with a practical introduction to the industry and the foundational skills required for entry-level work. It is ideal for those beginning a career or undertaking work experience, with applications across aquaculture farms, hatcheries, nurseries, aquaria, and pet shops. Students gain hands-on experience performing supervised tasks such as feeding, handling and harvesting stock, monitoring and testing water quality, and supporting aquaculture systems, with opportunities to work with species such as marron and participate in koi breeding. This course builds essential skills for future pathways in the aquaculture sector.
General Human Biology
The General Human Biology course gives students the opportunity to explore what it means to be human by examining the structure and function of the body and how its systems work together to maintain health. Students develop an understanding of how lifestyle choices impact wellbeing and the importance of regular health checks in preventing and managing disease. Through scientific inquiry and practical learning, they build skills in critical thinking, problem-solving and evaluating evidence, enabling them to make informed decisions about health-related issues such as diet, exercise and medical treatments. This course also provides a strong foundation for future pathways in areas such as nursing, allied health, childcare, sport and community services, while preparing students to be informed and responsible members of society.
ATAR Biology
The Biology ATAR course provides students with an in-depth understanding of the diversity of life and how living systems function, interact and evolve. Students explore biological concepts from the cellular level through to ecosystems, investigating processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, and species interactions, while developing practical skills through fieldwork, laboratory work and data analysis. The course builds scientific inquiry, critical thinking and communication skills, enabling students to evaluate evidence and consider ethical issues in biology. With a focus on real-world applications, students gain insight into challenges such as environmental sustainability, health and food security, preparing them for further study and careers in fields including medicine, environmental science, agriculture and biotechnology.
Year 12 Technologies
Year 12 Materials Design and Technology – Wood
Refining craftsmanship, mastering design, and preparing for real-world innovation.
In Year 12 Materials Design and Technology – Wood, students build on their prior knowledge to design and manufacture sophisticated timber-based products. They apply advanced skills in planning, technical drawing, and safe workshop practices while exploring the properties, sustainability, and ethical use of materials. Through the design process, students investigate real-world problems, generate creative solutions, and manage production from concept to completion. Emphasis is placed on precision, independence, and critical thinking as students evaluate their work and refine techniques. This course provides a strong foundation for future pathways in trades, engineering, architecture, and industrial design, while fostering innovation, responsibility, and pride in craftsmanship.
Year 12 Food Science and Technology
Investigating the science behind food, health, and innovation in a changing global landscape.
In Year 12 Food Science and Technology, students explore the complex systems that shape food availability, safety, and quality. They apply scientific principles to understand the sensory, chemical, and functional properties of food, while trialling and adapting recipes to meet diverse nutritional needs. The course examines the impact of food choices on health, including diet-related conditions and the consequences of under- and over-consumption. Students investigate biotechnology, genetic modification, and sustainability in food production, alongside issues of food equity and cultural diversity. Through practical tasks and critical inquiry, students develop skills in planning, producing, and evaluating food products, preparing them for careers in nutrition, health, hospitality, and food science.

Upper School Pathway options
Planning occurs each year for a range of ATAR and general subjects at Newton Moore SHS. We are able to offer Psychology, Modern History and Geography. These courses are discussed with the year 9 and 10 students.

Certificate II Sport and Recreation (CERT II)
This qualification reflects the role of individuals who apply the skills and knowledge to work in the sport and recreation industry in a generalist capacity. Likely functions for someone with this qualification include providing support in the provision of sport and recreation programs, grounds and facilities maintenance, routine housekeeping, retail and customer service assistance, administrative assistance and cafe service in locations such as fitness centres, out- door sporting grounds or complexes or aquatic centres. All job roles are performed under supervision. Students will be able to adapt to different situations and implement their knowledge in a practical setting.
Certificate III Sport and Recreation
This nationally recognised qualification prepares individuals for dynamic roles in the sport and community recreation industry. It reflects the multi-skilled nature of operational and customer support positions, equipping graduates to work across a range of settings including fitness centres, sporting clubs, aquatic facilities, and community recreation organisations. Learners develop practical skills in client service, equipment maintenance, facility operations, and activity assistance—making it an ideal pathway for those passionate about sport, recreation, and active lifestyles
General Outdoor Education
The focus for this stage is building confidence in the outdoors and outdoor leadership. It encourages students to build self-confidence as they interact with the environment and they are encouraged to develop outdoor leadership skills. They understand basic planning and organisational requirements. They develop camping, survival and navigation skills. Risk management principles, safe practice development and emergency response procedures are examined. Personal and interpersonal skills are developed to assist working with others and as a leader. Leader- ship experiences are provided. Their understanding of the environment with relationship to nature is developed and the concept of sustainability introduced. Awareness is increased through more study of parts of the natural environment, introduction to the concept of wilderness and study of the impact of technology, urbanisation and changing lifestyles.
Commitment:
Students must be aware that camps /expeditions will necessitate missing a number of school days throughout the year.
Physical Education Studies ATAR (AEPES)
Physical Education Studies contributes to the development of students’ physical, social and emotional growth. In the Physical Education Studies ATAR course students learn about physiological, psychological and biomechanical principles, and apply these to analyse and improve personal and group performances in physical activities. Throughout the course, students learn through integrated written, oral and active learning experiences. The course also provides students with opportunities to develop skills that will enable them to pursue personal interests and potential in physical activity as athletes, coaches, officials, administrators and/or volunteers.
Physical Education Studies General (GEPES)
Physical Education Studies contributes to the development of students’ physical, social and emotional growth. The Physical Education Studies General course provides students with opportunities to understand and improve performance through the integration of theoretical concepts and practical activities. Through engagement as performers, leaders, coaches, analysts and planners of physical activity, students may develop skills that can be utilised in leisure, recreation, education, sport development, youth work, health and medical fields

Visual Art General
Step into the future of art in our Year 11 and 12 General Visual Art course. Here, you’ll blend traditional techniques with modern digital tools to create artwork that reflects your experiences and inspirations. Our innovative approach encourages you to experiment, discover your own voice, and appreciate and learn from the work of other artists. You’ll also have the chance to showcase your artworks at multiple exhibitions throughout your studies, including the prestigious BRAG Illuka Visions Visual Art Exhibition.
Performing Arts
Music
Our Music program offers students a dynamic and creative learning experience through performance, theory, and composition. Students develop their musical skills while exploring a wide range of styles and instruments. There are many opportunities to perform, including school events and community festivals, as well as participation in ensembles such as Rock Band and Concert Band for IMSS students. We offer both Music Specialist streaming and Elective Music courses, allowing every student to grow their talent and passion for music at their own level.
Dance
Our Dance program offers students in Years 7 to 10 an exciting opportunity to explore movement, creativity, and performance through the dynamic world of dance. The program develops students’ physical skills, expressive techniques, and understanding of dance as a powerful form of communication.
Whether students are new to dance or building on prior experience, our program fosters confidence, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for the performing arts. Performances, showcases, and assessment tasks provide opportunities for students to shine and share their learning with the school community.

Vocational Education and Training (VET)
At Newton Moore Senior High School, our VET program is all about supporting senior students gain real-world skills and experiences that help them take the next step after school. All VET learning helps build transferrable skills and provides a basis for further learning. Students have the option to learn in the classroom and simulated workplace environments at school, make connections via workplace learning and partnerships with local businesses, or attend training providers such as TAFE or the Bunbury Regional Trade Training Centre (BRTTC) while still working toward their year 12 Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and graduation.
As a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), we deliver a nationally recognised certificate course in Aquaculture right here on campus.
We also offer workplace learning, giving students the chance to spend time in local businesses, build industry connections, and get a taste of what working life is really like.
We’re proud to partner with IVET to support our program, ensuring our students have a variety to choose from while being confident the learning is to industry standards.

Newton Moore Senior High School’s Aquaculture program is a unique, two-year, hands-on course that introduces students to the fascinating world of marine science and the seafood industry. This nationally recognised qualification is the perfect starting point for students interested in working with aquatic animals, exploring sustainable farming practices, or learning about marine environments and ecosystems.
Students learn by doing—working directly with live fish, managing aquaculture systems, and gaining practical experience in areas such as water quality testing, feeding routines, breeding techniques, and environmental care. The program is delivered on-site in our purpose-built facilities, allowing students to engage with real aquaculture operations in a safe and supportive learning environment.
As a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), Newton Moore SHS ensures that students receive high-quality training aligned with national standards. This nationally recognised certificate gives students a unique opportunity to connect with their school and the wider community through meaningful volunteer work. Delivered in a supportive and supervised environment, the program helps students build real-world skills, confidence, and a sense of purpose—all while making a positive impact.
Over one year, students take part in at least 20 hours of group-based volunteering, working in settings that reflect the real-life experiences of community volunteers. Through these experiences, students develop teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills, while gaining a deeper understanding of the value of giving back.
It’s a great way for students to grow personally and professionally, while building connections with the people and places that make up our local community.
CHC22015 Certificate II in Community Services – IVET RTO 40548
This nationally recognised certificate gives students a solid introduction to working in community services, with a focus on supporting people across a range of settings—including childcare, aged care, and disability support. It’s a great way for students to explore careers that involve helping others, while developing practical skills they can use both in the workplace and everyday life.
One of the highlights of the program is our school-based playgroup, where students spend two hours each week planning and running activities for young children in a realistic childcare setting. This hands-on experience helps students build confidence, learn how to communicate effectively, and understand the needs of different age groups.
Throughout the course, students also learn about safety, wellbeing, and professional behaviour in community service roles. They gain valuable insight into how support services operate and what it means to work responsibly and respectfully with clients.

Throughout the course, students develop the ability to plan, deliver, and evaluate sport and recreation sessions, gaining hands-on experience in coaching, officiating, and working with diverse groups. The program also covers key areas such as technology use in sport, safety and risk management, and effective communication—skills that are essential in today’s dynamic recreation environments.
Students are encouraged to take initiative and use their judgement to complete tasks and solve problems, helping them grow into capable and responsible leaders. The course is practical and engaging, with opportunities to apply learning in real-world contexts both within the school and the wider community.

VET delivered to School Students (VETdSS)
Senior students at Newton Moore Senior High School have the opportunity to participate in the VET Delivered to Secondary Students (VETdSS) program, which allows them to study off-campus at South Regional TAFE or the Bunbury Regional Trade Training Centre (BRTTC). This program is designed to give students access to specialised training environments, industry-standard equipment, and expert instruction—all while they continue their secondary education.
Through VETdSS, students can gain nationally recognised qualifications in a wide range of industries. Popular options include trades such as carpentry, automotive, and hairdressing, as well as pathways in hospitality, health, and individual support. These programs are hands-on and career-focused, helping students build practical skills and explore real-world job opportunities.
By learning in professional settings and engaging with industry practices, students develop confidence, independence, and a clearer understanding of their future goals. VETdSS also supports students in making informed decisions about further study, apprenticeships, or direct entry into the workforce.
Participation in VETdSS is a valuable part of our senior school offerings, giving students more choice, flexibility, and a head start in their chosen field.
Students must apply via the VET Office the year before attending the course.

Course Fees
All senior school VET courses offered through the Newton Moore SHS VET Office come with a compulsory fee. These fees cover essential materials, resources, and certification costs associated with each program. We encourage caregivers to refer to the school’s Contributions and Charges booklet for detailed information about course costs, payment options, and financial support that may be available.
Understanding these costs upfront helps families plan ahead and ensures students can fully participate in their chosen VET pathway.
