Year 7

Year 7 English

In Year 7 English, students read and craft inspiring and humorous poetry and participate in an exciting Poetry Slam competition and submit their poems to a national competition. They study and write short stories while learning, and then using, language tricks to position their readers to respond in particular ways. They learn how advertisers manipulate their audiences into wanting, and then buying, products and practise using those same multimodal techniques to persuade an audience through the creation of their own advertisement. They also read and critique a novel and the language it uses and look into the hearts and souls of the characters that bring the novel to life.
Year 7 English grows engagement, creativity and critical thinking.

Year 7 Maths

In the Lower Secondary years, our Mathematics program is designed to build confidence, logical reasoning, and analytical skills. We follow the Western Australian Curriculum (SCSA), ensuring every student develops the numeracy skills essential for everyday life and future careers.

To support our teaching, we use the Cambridge Essential Mathematics for the WA Curriculum series. This resource provides students with a consistent, high-quality framework that includes digital interactives, scaffolded examples, and varied practice problems to cater to all learning levels.

Year 7: Building the Foundation

The transition to high school focuses on consolidating primary school skills and introducing more formal mathematical notation.

• Number & Algebra: Students work with positive and negative numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages. They are introduced to variables (letters in math) to solve basic equations.
• Measurement & Geometry: Understanding angles, area, and volume, alongside the properties of shapes.
• Statistics & Probability: Learning how to collect data and calculate the likelihood of simple events.

Year 7 Science

In Year 7 Science, students explore the world around them through hands-on investigations. They catch and study bugs in the wetlands using dome magnifiers, measure how sustainable houses can be with the STELR kits, and work together to ask questions, make predictions, and test their ideas safely. Students learn about living things and ecosystems, the states of matter, how forces and machines affect motion, and how the Earth, sun, and moon interact. They record and share their findings using simple scientific language and models to explain what they discover. Year 7 Science inspires curiosity, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for how science connects to everyday life.

Year 7 Digital Technologies

In Year 7 Digital Technologies, students take their first deep dive into the systems and thinking that drive our modern lives. This course introduces the fundamentals of digital systems, data analysis, and algorithmic thinking through hands-on projects that spark curiosity and creativity.
Students explore:

• How digital systems communicate and share data across networks.
• How to collect, interpret, and present data to uncover patterns and solve problems.
• How to design algorithms using decision-making and repetition to build smart solutions.
• How to create digital products—such as games, quizzes, and simulations—using visual programming tools.
• How to navigate online environments safely and ethically, developing responsible digital citizenship.

Year 7 Design Technologies

In Year 7 Design and Technologies, students engage with two exciting contexts—Food and Fibre Production and Materials and Technologies Specialisations (Wood/Metal)—as outlined by the SCSA curriculum. In Food and Fibre, students explore sustainable practices in food preparation and agriculture, developing practical skills and understanding ethical and environmental considerations. In the Materials context, students work with wood and metal to design and construct functional products, learning safe tool use, material properties, and responsible workshop practices. Across both areas, students apply design thinking, collaborate with peers, and build confidence in solving real-world problems creatively and safely.

Year 7 HASS

In Year 7 HASS, students explore key aspects of Civics and Citizenship by learning about Australia’s system of government and the main features of our legal system. In Economics and Business, they examine how limited resources are used to meet unlimited needs and wants. Geography focuses on the movement and importance of water in the environment and how perceptions of liveability vary across places. In History, students’ journey through Deep Time Australian history and experience an on-country excursion to embed cultural understanding.

This engaging and diverse curriculum builds critical thinking and inquiry skills across all HASS discipline.

Year 7 HPE

Get ready to grow! Students explore changes like puberty, emotions, and friendships. They learn how to make good choices, eat well, and stay safe—especially online. In sport, they practise teamwork, fair play, and try new games. It’s all about building confidence and understanding yourself.

Electives

Personal Fitness These hands-on subject boosts fitness and confidence. Students set goals, plan workouts, and try activities like weights, circuits, running other training methods.

Community Recreation Try something different! Students explore fun activities like ten-pin bowling, beach volleyball, skating, croquet, and more. It’s all about enjoying movement.

Outdoor Education For students who love the outdoors! Learn camping, bushcraft, roping, and navigation. Prepare for an overnight hike and build self-reliance and teamwork.

Moore Sports Play your way! Students help shape the program and enjoy sports like basketball, soccer, multi-sports, tennis, bocce, floor hockey, ultimate and beach volleyball.

Basketball Train like a pro! Students build skills, game knowledge, and confidence through coaching, fitness, and competition. Great for teamwork and leadership.

Year 7 Visual Arts

Discovering creativity, building confidence, and exploring the world through visual expression.

In Year 7 Visual Arts, students begin to explore the foundations of artistic practice through both 2D and 3D media. They learn to express ideas and emotions visually while developing an understanding of how art reflects cultural, historical, and social contexts. Through the Making and Responding strands, students create artworks using a variety of materials and techniques, and critically reflect on their own work and the work of others. Safe studio practices, creative experimentation, and personal expression are central to the course, helping students build visual literacy and confidence in their artistic voice.

Visual Art

Digital Art

Year 7 Performing Arts

Music

Our Music program offers students a dynamic and creative learning experience through performance, theory, and composition. Students develop their musical skills while exploring a wide range of styles and instruments. There are many opportunities to perform, including school events and community festivals, as well as participation in ensembles such as Rock Band and Concert Band for IMSS students. We offer both Music Specialist streaming and Elective Music courses, allowing every student to grow their talent and passion for music at their own level.

Dance

Our Dance program offers students in Years 7 to 10 an exciting opportunity to explore movement, creativity, and performance through the dynamic world of dance. The program develops students’ physical skills, expressive techniques, and understanding of dance as a powerful form of communication.

Whether students are new to dance or building on prior experience, our program fosters confidence, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for the performing arts. Performances, showcases, and assessment tasks provide opportunities for students to shine and share their learning with the school community.
